With a view to impart Western Education to the girls in Manipur, under the instruction of His Highness, Churachand Singh, the then Maharaja of Manipur, formal education was started with only three girls in the Mandop of present Palace in May 1935. Gradually the number increased and it was shifted to the north eastern area of the palace compound and the The Tamphasana Girls’ High School, the first Girls’ High School in Manipur was born with H.H. Maharaj Churachand Singh as the founder of the school in fond memory of his beloved daughter (L) Maharaj Kumari Tamphasana Devi and H. Ibungotombi Singh became the founder Head Master of the school. Later on, it was shifted to the present site, after the construction of the school and building my Maharaj Churachand Singh after 2 world war.Historical Background :
In Feb., 1936 the Director of public instructions of Assam granted provisional recognition of this school allowing enrollment of class III to IX and the state allowed it a grant-in-aid of Rs. 100/- per month from June 1936. It was managed by a committee of 12 members appointed by His Highness. His Highness was the founder and its committee resolutions were subject to his approval. The School became a state school with effect from 01/06/1946 and its management was taken over by the State Government after dissolving the committee of the school.
The school was formerly granted permanent recognition on 10/01/1947 by the Calcutta (now Kolkata) University. In the year 1967, the school has been converted into a higher secondary opening XI and XII classes under Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi in addition to imparting knowledge up to class tenth standard under Board of Secondary Education, Manipur with effect from 1973 both for class ten and +2 level.
With the establishment of Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur in 1992, the school has been under the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur. From academic session 1999 – 2000 the school is having only plus two stage (i.e. XI & XII) following the Government Order for delinking class IX and X from the school.
Located in the heart of Imphal City with beautiful surroundings, the school has vast open space and big buildings for peaceful and concentrated academic works. The school popularly known as T.G. Higher Secondary School (in abbreviated form) has been continuing as an excellent study centre of the state particularly for girl students over the 8 decades.
